Spiral Bound Book Printing

Spiral and wire-o binding let a book lie flat and fold back on itself, so it stays open on a desk, a kitchen counter or a clipboard. We prepare your files, send a free proof and print the quantity you need.

Send the page count, trim size and how many copies you need. A print specialist replies with a written quote within one business day, and nothing prints until you approve it.

The short answer

Columbia Publication prints spiral bound and wire-o books in any quantity: workbooks, cookbooks, manuals, planners and course materials that need to lie flat or fold back on themselves. Files are checked and set up for the punched edge, every order gets a free digital proof, and there is no setup fee. You get a written quote within one business day.

Is this you?

This is for you if

  • Your reader writes in the book, cooks from it or follows it step by step with both hands busy.
  • A glued paperback keeps snapping shut on the page they need.
  • You teach a course, run a workshop or train a team and need the same book in every hand.
  • You sell your book on Amazon and want a spiral edition for classes, events or your own store.

A glued paperback will not stay open. A spiral bound book will.

Open a perfect bound workbook flat and it closes the moment you pick up a pen. Press it harder and the spine cracks, then pages start to loosen. For a novel that barely matters. For a workbook, a cookbook or a manual, it makes the book hard to use.

Spiral and wire-o binding solve it mechanically. The pages turn on the coil, so the book lies flat on any page and folds back on itself to half its footprint. We set your files up for the punched edge, proof every page with you and print the run you approve.

Choosing a binding

Spiral, wire-o or a glued spine?

How the four common bindings behave once the book is in use.

BindingLies flatFolds back on itselfPrinted spineBest for
Spiral coil (plastic)YesYesNoWorkbooks, cookbooks, planners, kids’ activity books
Wire-o (double loop wire)YesYesNoManuals, presentation books, premium cookbooks
Perfect bound paperbackNoNoYesNovels, nonfiction, anything for a bookstore shelf
Case bound hardcoverNot fullyNoYesGift, premium and library editions

Plastic coil flexes and stands up to rough handling, so it suits books that are carried around and used hard. Wire-o holds the pages in a straight, even line and looks more formal, so it suits manuals and presentation books. Neither has a printed spine, so the title does not show when the book stands on a shelf.

Selling a spiral edition

Can I sell a spiral bound book on Amazon?

Not through Amazon KDP itself. KDP offers two print formats: a paperback and a case laminate hardcover. Spiral and wire-o are not among them.

So authors who want both usually run two editions. The paperback and ebook stay on KDP for Amazon shoppers. The spiral edition is printed as a run and sold where people actually use it: in your classes and workshops, at events, through your website or in your own shop. Your interior can serve both, as long as the spiral version is set up with the wider inside margin the punched holes need.

Already on KDP? Send the paperback files and we will quote the spiral edition from them.

Before anything prints

What changes in the files for spiral binding?

A wider inside margin

The holes are punched along the binding edge, so text and images need extra room on that side. We adjust the margin so nothing important lands in a hole.

No spine to design

A coil has no printed spine, so the cover is a front and a back. If you also sell a paperback, we build the spiral cover from the same artwork.

Covers that last

Workbooks, cookbooks and manuals are opened every day. We advise on cover stock and lamination so the cover holds up to that use.

A free digital proof

You check every page, the margins and the cover before anything prints. A printed proof on the real paper is available on request, billed separately.

Questions

Spiral bound printing: common questions

What is the difference between spiral and wire-o binding?

Spiral binding threads a single continuous plastic coil through punched holes. It flexes, survives rough handling and turns a full circle. Wire-o uses a double loop of metal wire, so the pages sit in a straight, even line and the book looks more formal. Both lie flat and fold back on themselves.

Is there a minimum order for spiral bound books?

No. Tell us the quantity, however small, and we quote that exact number. Larger runs for schools, companies and organizations are handled by our bulk printing team.

Can I sell a spiral bound book on Amazon KDP?

Not through KDP itself, which prints paperbacks and case laminate hardcovers only. Many authors keep the paperback and ebook on KDP and sell a printed spiral edition directly, at classes, events or through their own website.

Do I need different files for a spiral edition?

Usually only the inside margin and the cover change. The holes need extra room on the binding edge, and a coil has no spine. We adjust both for you and show the result on a free digital proof.

Can you print color interiors with spiral binding?

Yes. Cookbooks, activity books and illustrated guides can be printed in full color, and the cover can be laminated to stand up to daily use.

Is there a setup fee?

No. Setup and pre-press are built into the quoted price, so there is no extra line on the invoice.

How do I pay?

In full, once you approve the written quote. Payment books your press time and fixes your delivery date.

Tell us how the book gets used. We will tell you how to bind it.

Page count, trim size and a rough quantity are enough to start. A print specialist writes back within one business day.
