The Imprint Itself

What is Gravitas Press?

Gravitas Press is a curated publishing imprint operated under Columbia Publication LLC in Arlington, Virginia. We publish narrative nonfiction, business, memoir, history, biography, literary fiction, and prescriptive self-help by selective submission. Our editorial team reads every submission personally and accepts roughly 30-40 percent.

How is Gravitas Press different from Columbia Publication?

Columbia Publication provides full-service publishing to any author who engages with us. Gravitas Press is a curated imprint within Columbia Publication, adding editorial selection and imprint credit. Gravitas Press authors receive the same production team, but their books carry imprint positioning that signals editorial endorsement beyond the production quality alone.

Who is behind Gravitas Press editorially?

Gravitas Press is edited by Columbia Publication's senior editorial team, which has collective experience from major publishing houses. Every accepted manuscript is assigned to a senior editor appropriate to its category. The editor manages the manuscript through production and serves as the author's primary editorial contact throughout.

When was Gravitas Press founded?

Gravitas Press operates as an imprint within Columbia Publication LLC, which has been publishing professionally since 2018. The imprint structure was formalized to serve serious nonfiction and literary authors who wanted editorial curation and imprint credibility alongside Columbia's production infrastructure.

Submissions

How do I submit to Gravitas Press?

Send your complete submission package to gravitas@columbiapublication.com as a single PDF attachment. Include a one-page synopsis, two-paragraph target audience description, first three chapters, word count and genre, and a brief author background paragraph. Full requirements are detailed on our submissions page.

How long does Gravitas Press take to respond to submissions?

Gravitas Press responds to every submission within 10 business days. Complete submissions that meet our requirements receive a detailed response. Incomplete submissions are returned quickly with a request for the missing elements so the author can resubmit properly.

Can I submit to multiple publishers simultaneously?

Yes. Simultaneous submissions are expected and welcome. We ask only that you notify us promptly if your manuscript is accepted elsewhere so we can close our review. Our 10-day response timeline exists specifically so authors do not have to hold manuscripts exclusive while waiting.

What percentage of submissions does Gravitas Press accept?

Gravitas Press accepts approximately 30 to 40 percent of submissions. This selectivity is intentional. An imprint that accepts everything provides nothing a self-publisher could not provide for themselves. Editorial curation is the imprint's core value proposition.

Why was my submission declined?

Every declined submission receives a specific reason in the response email, not a generic rejection. Common specific reasons include: manuscript requires more developmental work than our timeline allows, target audience not clearly identified, category does not match our list, or voice not yet at publication-ready level. Authors can often address these reasons and resubmit.

Can I resubmit a previously declined manuscript?

Yes, if the decline included specific feedback and you have addressed it substantively. Do not resubmit the same manuscript unchanged. Include a note in your resubmission explaining what you revised and why, referencing the original decline feedback. Resubmissions receive the same 10-day review timeline.

Rights, Royalties, and Economics

Does Gravitas Press take my rights?

Gravitas Press does not acquire any rights to your manuscript. You retain copyright in perpetuity. The ISBN is registered in your name. You own your book completely before, during, and after publication. Gravitas Press provides publishing services and imprint credit under the Columbia Publication LLC umbrella.

Does Gravitas Press pay advances?

No. Gravitas Press does not pay advances. This is because Gravitas Press does not acquire rights to your book. The hybrid publishing model compensates the author through 100 percent royalty retention rather than through advances against future royalties. Authors who specifically want an advance should pursue traditional publishing.

How much does Gravitas Press cost?

Gravitas Press production pricing ranges from 4,000 to 7,000 dollars depending on manuscript length, editorial depth required, and services included. The standard package is 5,500 dollars covering developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, cover design, interior formatting, ISBN, Library of Congress filing, and global distribution setup.

What royalty rate do Gravitas Press authors earn?

Gravitas Press authors earn 100 percent of royalties directly from Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Apple Books, and other distribution platforms. Gravitas Press does not take any royalty split. Amazon KDP pays 35 or 70 percent royalties (author selects the tier), IngramSpark pays based on wholesale discount settings, and other platforms have their own rates. All of these flow directly to the author.

How is Gravitas Press pricing different from vanity publishers?

Vanity publishers charge 15,000 to 30,000 dollars or more for production with hidden royalty splits, rights grabs, and undeliverable marketing promises. Gravitas Press charges a transparent flat production fee (4,000-7,000 dollars) with no royalty split, no rights acquisition, and realistic service deliverables. The economic structure is fundamentally different despite superficial similarities in the upfront-fee model.

Is Gravitas Press profitable for authors on lower-volume books?

Gravitas Press becomes economically advantageous over traditional publishing at approximately 500-800 copies sold and over self-publishing at volumes where professional production materially increases conversion. Authors expecting fewer than 300 copies sold may find the investment difficult to recoup, though many authors value imprint credibility beyond direct sales revenue.

Production and Editorial Process

What is the production timeline for Gravitas Press books?

Standard Gravitas Press production runs 10 to 14 weeks from accepted manuscript to published book. This covers editorial refinement, design, formatting, platform setup, and distribution activation. Complex manuscripts requiring heavy editorial work may run longer. Your assigned specialist provides a firm timeline before production begins.

What editing levels are included?

Gravitas Press production includes three editorial passes: developmental editing focused on structure and argument, copyediting for grammar and consistency, and final proofreading before print-ready files. Every manuscript receives all three passes. Additional specialized editing (fact-checking, sensitivity reading, legal review) can be added for specific manuscript requirements.

Who designs the cover?

Covers are designed by Columbia Publication's in-house design team or trusted contract designers matched to the manuscript's category. Every cover includes multiple concept directions, two rounds of revisions, and final production to Amazon KDP and IngramSpark specifications. Authors approve every stage of cover development.

Can I request specific production team members?

Authors can request specific editors or designers they have worked with previously at Columbia Publication, though team assignments depend on availability and manuscript category fit. New Gravitas Press authors are matched based on manuscript needs, and the matching process is typically accurate on the first assignment.

How many revision rounds does the editorial process include?

Developmental editing includes two revision rounds with the author after initial editorial notes. Copyediting includes one revision round where the author reviews and accepts or rejects edits. Proofreading is a final clean pass with author approval. This matches traditional publisher editorial processes while operating on a dramatically faster timeline.

Distribution and Marketing

Where are Gravitas Press books distributed?

Gravitas Press books distribute globally through Amazon KDP (all Amazon regional stores), IngramSpark wholesale distribution to 40,000+ retailers and libraries, Apple Books, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and other eBook platforms. Physical bookshop placement depends on individual retailer buying decisions through the Ingram wholesale network.

Does Gravitas Press handle book marketing?

Standard Gravitas Press production includes launch support: Amazon listing optimization, author page setup, press release distribution through wire services, and a 90-day launch plan. Ongoing marketing beyond launch is available as an add-on service or through Columbia Publication's marketing services team. Authors retain full control of their marketing decisions throughout.

Will Gravitas Press books get reviewed by major media?

Gravitas Press distributes press materials to major book review outlets but cannot guarantee coverage. Review coverage depends on the book, the reviewer's interest, and the category. Some Gravitas Press titles receive significant review attention; others do not. We are honest about what our marketing can and cannot deliver.

Can Gravitas Press books be submitted for literary prizes?

Yes. Gravitas Press books are eligible for most literary prizes including independent publisher awards, category-specific awards, and many major prizes. Some major prizes (like the Pulitzer) have traditional publisher requirements that can be difficult for hybrid publishers. Our team helps identify appropriate prize opportunities for each title.

Author Relationship

Who is my main contact after a submission is accepted?

Every Gravitas Press author receives a dedicated publishing specialist who serves as their single point of contact from acceptance through publication and post-launch. This specialist coordinates editorial, design, production, and distribution activities on the author's behalf, eliminating the coordination burden that comes with managing multiple freelancers independently.

Can I publish my next book with Gravitas Press?

Yes. Gravitas Press authors can publish subsequent books with us through the same submission process. Previously published Gravitas Press authors often have a shorter submission review timeline since our editorial team already knows their work. Each new manuscript is evaluated on its own merits.

Can I publish elsewhere after Gravitas Press?

Yes. Because you retain all rights, you can publish any future book with any publisher. Gravitas Press does not have option clauses on future work, non-compete provisions, or any restrictions on your future publishing choices. This is a fundamental difference from traditional publishing contracts.

What happens if I want to move my Gravitas Press book to a different publisher later?

Gravitas Press authors can move their books to other publishers at any time. Because you retain all rights, you can terminate distribution through Gravitas Press channels and republish elsewhere. Authors typically do this if they later receive a traditional publishing offer or want to republish with a different imprint. We cooperate with these transitions professionally.
