Who owns the ISBN for my book?
Last updated: October 9, 2026
You do. Columbia Publication registers an ISBN in your name for each format of your book, so you are the publisher of record.
Why does the name on the ISBN matter?
The ISBN record tells retailers, libraries and distributors who publishes the book. A free ISBN supplied by a platform or a publishing company can tie the book to that company. An ISBN in your name stays with you if you ever change printer or distributor.
How many ISBNs do I need?
One per format. A paperback, a hardcover and an ebook each need their own ISBN. Our Global Publish package includes ISBNs in your name for all three formats. ISBN registration is a third-party cost, so it cannot be refunded once registered.
