Unbound Publishing Closed — What Happens to Your Book

Unbound Publishing entered administration in January 2025, ending a 14-year experiment in crowdfunded publishing. Thousands of authors who published through Unbound, or who had books in production at the time of closure, now face the same question: what happens to my book?

What Happened to Unbound

Unbound was a UK-based publisher that used a crowdfunding model: authors pitched their book to readers who pledged support, and if the project reached its funding target, Unbound published it with full editorial, design and distribution services. The model attracted literary authors who preferred reader validation over traditional submission processes.

Unbound entered administration in January 2025 after failing to secure continued investment. The closure affected authors with books in print, authors with projects in production, and backers who had pledged to unfunded campaigns. The administrator handling the closure is responsible for the wind-down process including author file access and any outstanding royalty payments.

Your Rights as an Unbound Author

Unbound's publishing agreements generally retained copyright with the author. Your manuscript is yours. The practical complications are three: first, the ISBN on your current edition is registered to Unbound as publisher of record; second, your production files (formatted interior, cover source files) may be held by the administrator; third, your book's sales history and reviews are tied to the existing Amazon and retailer listings.

To continue selling your book: contact the administrator to request your production files. If files are not available, your manuscript can be reformatted and republished under a new ISBN. The new edition will be a separate listing on Amazon, but your existing reviews can be requested for transfer by contacting Amazon Author Central.

Publishing Options for UK Authors

Columbia Publication serves authors in the United Kingdom, United States, UAE, Canada and Australia. UK authors who published through Unbound and need to republish have three practical routes:

Route 1 — Republish with existing files. If you have your production files, Columbia Publication can prepare them for KDP and IngramSpark distribution from $499 through the Kindle Launch package. Timeline: 2-3 weeks.

Route 2 — Republish with new cover and formatting. If you do not have production files but have your manuscript, Global Publish at $1,499 includes new cover design, interior formatting and global distribution to Amazon, IngramSpark, Kobo, Apple Books and 40+ platforms. Timeline: 4-5 weeks.

Route 3 — Full relaunch. For authors who want their Unbound book relaunched with fresh editorial polish and a proper launch strategy, Full Production at $2,499 includes proofreading, dedicated management and a 12-week launch sequence. Timeline: 7-9 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Unbound Publishing?
Unbound entered administration in January 2025 after failing to secure investment. The company published over 1,000 books through its crowdfunding model over 14 years. The administrator is handling the wind-down including author file requests and outstanding financial matters.
Do I still own my rights?
In most cases yes. Unbound agreements generally retained copyright with the author. The complication is the ISBN: your current edition lists Unbound as publisher of record. A new edition under a new ISBN resolves this.
Can I get my production files?
Contact the administrator handling the Unbound closure. If files are not available, your manuscript can be reformatted. Columbia Publication can work from a clean manuscript document.
Will my Amazon reviews transfer to a new edition?
Amazon does not automatically merge reviews across editions. You can request a review merge through Amazon Author Central by showing both editions are the same work. Success is not guaranteed but many authors have achieved it successfully.
Does Columbia Publication serve UK authors?
Yes. Columbia Publication serves authors in the UK, US, UAE, Canada and Australia. Publishing packages start at $499 and include IngramSpark distribution, which covers UK bookstore and library access through Gardners.
