What Happened to Unbound
Unbound was a UK-based publisher that used a crowdfunding model: authors pitched their book to readers who pledged support, and if the project reached its funding target, Unbound published it with full editorial, design and distribution services. The model attracted literary authors who preferred reader validation over traditional submission processes.
Unbound disclosed a severe cash crisis in January 2025, including unpaid royalties, a failed capital raise, and a change of CEO, and entered formal administration on 10 March 2025 after failing to secure continued investment (Time Extension; Publishers Weekly, accessed 27 Aug 2026). The closure affected authors with books in print, authors with projects in production, and backers who had pledged to unfunded campaigns. Unbound's administrators, Opus Restructuring, sold the business in a pre-pack deal to a new company, Boundless Publishing Group, which took over author contracts and payment obligations. Boundless itself ceased trading on 1 August 2025 and entered liquidation on 19 August 2025 (The Gazette; The Bookseller, accessed 27 Aug 2026). Outstanding claims from either collapse are now handled as creditor claims through the respective insolvency process, not a live customer-service channel; the Society of Authors is advising affected authors on next steps.

Unbound's publishing agreements generally retained copyright with the author. Your manuscript is yours. The practical complications are three: first, the ISBN on your current edition is registered to Unbound as publisher of record; second, your production files (formatted interior, cover source files) were held by Unbound and then Boundless, both of which have since closed, and may not be recoverable from either company; third, your book's sales history and reviews are tied to the existing Amazon and retailer listings.
Most original Unbound contracts named liquidation or receivership, not administration, as the trigger for rights reverting to the author, so it is Boundless's own liquidation in August 2025, not just Unbound's earlier administration, that most clearly supports your rights having reverted (The Bookseller, accessed 27 Aug 2026). To continue selling your book: if you have your own copy of your production files, they can be used directly. With both Unbound and its successor Boundless now closed, file recovery from either company is unlikely, so your manuscript can instead be reformatted from your original Word document and republished under a new ISBN. The new edition will be a separate listing on Amazon, but you can ask Amazon to link the new edition to the original listing so the editions can share reviews. Amazon decides whether to link them.
