Vantage Press Authors: Rights Recovery and Republishing

Vantage Press operated for 65 years before closing in 2013. Founded in 1949, it was among the first American vanity presses and published approximately 30,000 books in its history. Many authors who published with Vantage Press during its later decades still have books they want in print and actively available — but the closure left them without a publisher and without a clear path to new distribution.

What Vantage Press Was

Vantage Press was founded in New York in 1949 as a subsidy publisher — the model where authors paid for publication services rather than receiving an advance. For much of its history this was one of the few routes available to authors who could not secure a traditional publishing deal. Vantage Press published across a wide range of genres including fiction, memoir, poetry, military history and political commentary.

By the time it closed in 2013 the publishing landscape had shifted significantly. Self-publishing platforms had made direct distribution accessible to any author, and the subsidy press model faced increasing competition. Vantage Press wound down operations after 65 years, leaving its authors without ongoing support, royalty payments or file access.

Your Rights After Vantage Press Closed

Vantage Press contracts generally retained copyright with the author. The practical complications are three: the ISBN on your current edition is registered to Vantage Press; your production files (formatted interior, cover files) were held by Vantage and may not be directly accessible; and your book's sales history is tied to the existing listing under the old ISBN.

A new ISBN from Bowker creates a new publisher of record — you, or a new publishing service you choose. The old listing does not disappear but the new edition becomes the primary active version. For authors whose Vantage Press books are still occasionally sold through secondary markets, republishing a new edition gives them a clean, properly royaltied listing to direct readers to.

Recovering Your Files

Vantage Press has been closed for over a decade. Direct file recovery from the company is not possible. If you have a personal copy of your original manuscript in Word or any text format, Columbia Publication can produce a complete new edition from that document. If you have only a printed copy of your book, we can discuss conversion options during the free consultation.

Many Vantage Press authors kept copies of their formatted interiors as PDFs. If you have these, the Kindle Launch package at $499 can prepare and distribute them to Amazon KDP. If a new cover or full formatting is required, Global Publish at $1,499 covers everything.

Why Republishing Still Makes Sense

For many Vantage Press authors the book represents years of work — a family history, a memoir, a novel or a collection of poetry that deserves to be properly available. The question of whether to republish is not primarily financial. It is about whether the book exists in a form that new readers can find, buy and receive in acceptable condition.

A Vantage Press book republished through Columbia Publication is available on Amazon within weeks, distributed to Kobo, Apple Books, Barnes and Noble and IngramSpark globally, and listed under the author as rightful publisher. It can also be formatted as an ebook for the first time, reaching readers who were never accessible through the original print-only Vantage edition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Vantage Press?
Vantage Press closed in 2013 after 65 years of operation. It was one of the original American vanity presses, founded in 1949. Authors lost ongoing royalty payments and file support at closure.
Do I still own my Vantage Press book?
Yes. Copyright was retained by authors. The ISBN on your edition lists Vantage Press as publisher of record, which a new Bowker ISBN resolves for any new edition.
Can I republish a Vantage Press book?
Yes in most cases. Columbia Publication publishes from $499 for authors with existing files, or from $1,499 for a full new edition including cover design and global distribution.
My only copy is a printed book. Can that be republished?
Contact us for a consultation. Depending on the book's format and condition there are conversion options available. A free consultation will clarify the most practical path for your specific situation.
